Skydiving gear scam warning signs
Most sellers are honest jumpers. A few are not, and used gear is a favorite target. These signs should make you slow down.
Warning signs
- The price is far below similar gear, often with a sad story or a rush to sell
- They will not meet, video call, or let you inspect the gear before you pay
- The photos look copied or generic, or do not show labels and serial numbers
- They ask for payment you cannot reverse, such as gift cards, wire transfers, crypto, or “friends and family” payments
- The profile is brand new, or the details of the story do not add up
- They push you to hurry, or to switch to another app right away
Safer habits
- Meet in person at a drop zone when you can, and bring a rigger
- Ask for serial numbers, compare them with the photos and paperwork, and check them against USPA's stolen gear reports
- Ask people at your drop zone if they know the seller
- Use a payment method that offers some protection, and keep records
- Do not pay for gear you have not seen unless you have verified the seller another way
- For shipped gear, have the seller send it to a rigger you trust, who checks it and holds it until the deal is done. A seller who refuses is a red flag
If something feels off
Walk away. Use the report button on a Skydive Buy & Sell listing so a moderator can look, and tell your drop zone community so others are warned.
